Aadhaar core biometric identification awards

Awarded Status as of 29 July 2010 · Funding type: Not published

India's Planning Commission announced three consortium awards for Aadhaar's core biometric identification system in July 2010 1. The planned first phase covered deduplication of 200 million residents, not a reported delivery total. Later CAG oversight found duplicate-number problems and recorded UIDAI's accuracy and remedial explanations 2. Those findings concern the programme over subsequent years and cannot be assigned to one of the original suppliers from this evidence. This entry records the initial awards without treating their two-year first phase as a contract still operating today. Price and detailed contractual data rights remain unconfirmed.

Timeline

  1. 29 July 2010: Recorded status is Awarded.
  2. 2022: CAG Report 24 of 2021, paragraph 3.2.2, recorded about 475,000 duplicate Aadhaar numbers cancelled by November 2019 and found deficiencies in deduplication. This is programme-level oversight across later years, not an allocation of responsibility among the 2010 consortium members 2.
  3. UIDAI's response in that report claimed 99.9% accuracy, automated duplicate removal and improvements under new provider service levels. CAG maintained that monitoring and biometric identification needed strengthening 2.
